ETH Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich)
None
other than Gottfried Semper, the renowned 19th century
architect, built the ETH on the site where the city
fortifications had once stood. The Eidgenössisches
Polytechnikum (Federal Polytechnic), which was founded in
1855, heralded the beginning of a new era. Semper himself was
the head of the ETH College of Architecture. Nowadays,
approximately 12,000 people study at the ETH, which, as a
science and technology university with an outstanding research
record, has developed into one of the leading educational
institutions in the world. No fewer than 21 Nobel Prize
winners are linked with the ETH, including such illustrious
names as Albert Einstein and Wilhelm Konrad Röntgen. Competing
internationally with other top universities, the ETH is developing new, forward-looking areas of study.
Its courses encompass the fields of architecture, civil engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, system-oriented natural sciences, humanities and social & political sciences.
The ETH Science City
project on the Hönggerberg site represents a new model for the university of the future.

University of Zürich
The University of Zürich was founded in
1833, although its beginnings date back to 1525 and the Swiss
reformer, Ulrich Zwingli. With its 24,000 students and 1,900
graduations each year, the University of Zurich is the largest
in Switzerland. Moreover, 2,000 lecturers teaching at more
than 140 institutes offer the broadest range of further
education of all the Swiss universities. The University of Zurich
enjoys international repute thanks to its successful research work, particularly in the fields of molecular biology, brain research and anthropology, as well as the activities of the University and Veterinary Hospitals.
