Gates of Hell by Auguste Rodin

Five copies exist of the Gates of Hell, a sculptured bronze door created in 1919 by Auguste Rodin which is now located in front of the Kunsthaus. Standing seven meters high, it is a vision of life after death, inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy. It shows 186 figures grouped around a central "Thinker". Powerful but graceful fabulous creatures, people and animals are depicted rising up or falling into hell. The sculpture is realistic, even if partially deliberately exaggerated to better illustrate the basic themes of fear, desire and suffering.
